Hey everyone, I wish I had made this follow up for you sooner but there is no time like the present right?
So that we are all on the same page, Depo-Testosterone (testosterone cypionate injection) is an androgen indicated for hormonal replacement therapy in guys amab and trans men. This is what I’ll be referencing.
If you read my original post, T was making my throat sore when I took it. It turns out this is not completely uncommon. For me, it was an indicator of a larger problem. Throat nodules. I was a professional singer for many years and unknowingly damaged my vocal cords.
A few cautionary notes:
Testosterone injections should not be given to a child younger than 12 years old. Some types of this testosterone are approved for use by ppl younger than 18.
Testosterone can raise your blood pressure, which could increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.
Tell your caregivers right away if you have a tight feeling in your throat, a sudden urge to cough, or if you feel light-headed or short of breath during or shortly after receiving the injection, it may be an indicator of a larger problem like it was with me.
Did removing the nodules help? Yes and no. Since the removal of the nodules allows my vocal cords to viberate with less effort than pre surgery, making my voice reach a lower octave for that rich masculine sound is actually possible now. But, singing… thats another story. I will need full vocal rehab and training in order to get my singing voice back. I did find a voice coach that specializes in men that have been on testosterone. I recommend wether you have nodules or not, please please please start vocal therapy and coaching asap. Starting as soon as possible will help you avoid a ton of depression and sadness I promise.
I love the changes Testosterone has made in my body and I have zero regrets. Actually I think if I had known the outcome, I would have not had the surgery, kept my singing voice and just been a high pitched male. My voice now is almost a rich baritone/tenor. I do have fun singing to myself in such lower keys but…I dare not sing on a stage….for now.
Soon ill be writing a follow up on Testosterone and painful abdominal cramps. Thanks.
